Should I keep a photo as PNG?

Usually no. Photos shrink more as JPEG or WebP. Keep PNG for UI, logos, and hard edges with few colours.

What does the colour count do?

PNG uses a 2–256 colour palette instead of a quality slider. Fewer colours mean a smaller file and flatter gradients.

Do PNG files get uploaded?

No. Encoding runs on your device.

Can I convert PNG to JPEG or WebP?

Yes. Change the output format. JPEG drops transparency. Stay on PNG to keep the alpha channel.

Will a PNG keep a transparent background?

Yes if you stay on PNG. The palette pass copies the alpha channel. JPEG output will not.

Why is my PNG still large?

A photo saved as PNG has little to give a palette. Switch to JPEG or WebP, or drop the colour count on flat art.

Can I batch PNG files?

Yes. Drop many files, compress all, then download a ZIP.

Compress PNG

PNG photos compress better as JPEG or WebP. Flat graphics keep PNG with a 2–256 colour palette. Drop a file, compare on the slider, then download. Files stay on your device.

How to compress a PNG

PNG for graphics. JPEG or WebP for photos.

A camera PNG is usually the wrong container. Palette PNG is for flat colour.

PNG

Palette export, 2–256 colours. Alpha is kept when you stay on PNG.

JPEG

The usual output for a photo that arrived as PNG.

WebP

Often smaller than JPEG for the same photo.

AVIF

Use when you can wait for a slower encode.

PNG in. Smaller file out.

These demos started as JPEG camera files. The slider still shows what a photo pass looks like.

9.2 MB → 960 KB WebP. A PNG of this scene would be huge; WebP is the photo path.
