Canadian passport photos at 50×70 mm — IRCC-ready framing

Canada uses a taller 50×70 mm format, not the international 35×45 mm standard. Passprint applies IRCC-aligned face height (31–36 mm chin to crown), eye-line placement, and plain light backgrounds so studios deliver print-ready Canadian passport photos without manual measurement.

Canada’s photo rules are easy to miss when staff default to 35×45 mm habits

IRCC rejects photos that are the wrong physical size, have the wrong head measurement, show shadows or busy backgrounds, or look digitally altered. Passprint encodes the Canadian preset so counters stop mixing US, UK, and Canada specs. Finish jobs in the passport photo maker when you need batch print sheets. Passprint automates the entire workflow from upload to print-ready sheet in just a few clicks.

Studio challenge

True 50×70 mm Canadian preset

Width and height are locked to 50×70 mm at 300 DPI (~591×827 px) — not stretched from a 35×45 crop that fails when measured with a ruler.

Studio challenge

Head size within IRCC bands

Face height from chin to crown targets 31–36 mm (about 44–52% of the 70 mm frame), with eye-line placement matching Canadian framing guidance.

02 / 03
Studio challenge

Fewer IRCC rejections

Plain white or light backgrounds, no heavy shadows, and consistent framing reduce the “come back tomorrow” visits that hurt studio reputation.

IRCC photo specs at a glance

Canadian passport photographs are taller than India/UK 35×45 mm prints and use a millimetre face-height rule unique to IRCC. Review the diagram before you crop — then see the 50×70 mm size guide for pixel-level detail.

Dimensions, capture rules, and export for Canada

Official dimensions

IRCC requires 50 mm width by 70 mm height (5×7 cm). That taller rectangle is not interchangeable with 35×45 mm or US 2×2. Ruler checks catch approximate “tall crop” edits.

Face height

Chin-to-crown distance must sit between 31 and 36 mm inside the 50×70 mm frame, with eyes in the upper portion. Passprint’s Canada preset encodes this millimetre band.

Background

Use a plain white or light backdrop with no texture, props, or other people. Shadows behind the head are a classic IRCC fail. The white background guide covers cleanup before you lock the Canadian crop.

Lighting

Soft front light reduces cheek and chin shadows in the taller frame. Avoid window backlight and beauty filters. Shoot from eye level so the 31–36 mm band can be met without cutting the crown.

Glasses

Clear prescription glasses may be acceptable if there is no glare and the eyes remain visible. Tinted lenses are not. When glare appears, remove the glasses and reshoot.

Children and babies

Children use the same 50×70 mm size and face-height band. Keep supporting hands out of frame on a plain light surface. Capture a recent likeness — outdated newborn photos fail when the child no longer matches.

Common rejection reasons

IRCC commonly rejects wrong size (especially 35×45), face height outside 31–36 mm, shadows, smile, outdated photos, glasses glare, hats (except religious coverings that leave the face visible), and heavy retouching.

Print vs digital

Most Canadian passport applications still require physical prints on quality paper, sometimes with guarantor or studio markings as IRCC directs. Check the current IRCC photo page before choosing export format.

DPI and pixels

At 300 DPI, 50×70 mm is about 591×827 pixels — sharp enough for trimmed IRCC prints. See the ICAO guide for Doc 9303 context beyond Canada’s outer size.

Canada passport photo FAQ

Canada passport photo size & IRCC requirements

Canadian passport photographs must be 50 mm wide by 70 mm high. The face (chin to crown) should measure 31–36 mm. Backgrounds must be plain white or light-coloured with no shadows. Photos should be recent, show a neutral expression, and be printed on quality paper — or supplied digitally when IRCC asks for an electronic file.

Passprint uses AI-assisted processing for background replacement, face framing, and sizing. Final acceptance is decided by the issuing authority — always verify against the official references on this page and inspect your printed sheet before submission.
