Schengen visa photos at 35×45 mm — ICAO-aligned for Europe

Travel agencies and visa centres serve Schengen destinations that share a common 35×45 mm photo format and ICAO-style face framing. Passprint’s schengen_visa preset delivers consistent light backgrounds, face-height bands, and dual digital/print export so staff stop improvising crops per embassy.

For travel agencies

One Schengen photo workflow for every embassy when staff edits should not vary by destination country

Agencies waste time reconciling slightly different staff crops across Schengen applications — France one week, Spain the next, Germany after that. Passprint applies the same 35×45 mm crop, light background, and ICAO-aligned face height on every file so travellers get predictable output before biometrics. Passprint automates the entire workflow from upload to print-ready sheet in just a few clicks.

35×45 mm European visa framing at a glance

Schengen visa photographs typically use the international 35×45 mm rectangle with ICAO Doc 9303–style face positioning and a plain light background. Individual member states may publish supplementary rules — always check the embassy or visa-centre checklist for the destination.

Embassy rules, ICAO framing, and agency export tips

Official dimensions

Most Schengen short-stay visa photo instructions specify 35 mm wide by 45 mm high. That matches the common international passport rectangle — but it is not interchangeable with a US 2×2 square. Ruler checks catch approximate “close enough” edits at the visa centre counter.

ICAO face height

Face height from chin to crown typically targets about 70–80% of the image height, with the head centred and eyes in the upper portion. Passprint’s schengen_visa preset encodes this ICAO-style band before you export.

Background

Plain light grey or white backgrounds are commonly required. Avoid textured walls, outdoor scenes, and heavy shadows behind the head. Pair background replacement with the white background guide when walk-ins arrive against busy backdrops.

Lighting and expression

Soft front light reduces cheek and chin shadows in the taller 45 mm frame. Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open. Beauty filters and tilted selfies fail both automated checks and human review.

Glasses and head coverings

Clear prescription glasses may be acceptable if there is no glare and both eyes remain visible; tinted lenses are not. Religious head coverings that leave the face fully visible are often allowed — confirm the destination’s checklist.

Embassy and VAC variations

While dimensions are largely shared, some embassies or visa application centres publish extra rules on paper quality, number of prints, or digital upload formats. Keep the schengen_visa crop fixed and adjust delivery (print count vs JPEG) per checklist.

Common rejection reasons

Typical rejects include wrong size (especially US squares), face height outside the ICAO band, shadows, smile, outdated photos, glasses glare, cropped crown or chin, and low-resolution phone crops printed soft at 35×45 mm.

Print vs digital

Many Schengen processes still want physical prints on photo paper; others accept digital files for online forms. Export a 300 DPI sheet for cutting and a single JPEG when the portal asks for an electronic photo.

DPI and pixels

At 300 DPI, 35×45 mm is about 413×531 pixels — sharp enough for trimmed embassy prints. See the 35×45 size guide for pixel-level detail and the ICAO guide for Doc 9303 context beyond outer size.
