Stop guessing India passport photo specs when consular rejections cost you repeat visits

Indian passport applications reject photos for subtle sizing errors — off-centre faces, wrong background tone, or low-resolution prints. Passprint encodes Passport Seva expectations so your counter staff do not memorise millimetre rules. Use this page with the passport photo maker and the crop passport photo guide for full framing control. Passprint automates the entire workflow from upload to print-ready sheet in just a few clicks.

Passport Seva photo specs at a glance

Indian passport photographs follow a 35×45 mm outer size with a high face-to-frame ratio and a plain white backdrop. Use the diagram and comparison below before you crop — then finish in the passport photo maker.

Official dimensions

Passport Seva specifies 35 mm width by 45 mm height (3.5×4.5 cm). That rectangle is the same outer size used in many countries, but Indian processors still measure prints and reject soft or stretched files. The 35×45 mm size guide covers millimetre math in more detail.

Face height

Guidance typically expects the face to occupy roughly 70–80% of the image height, with the head centred and both ears visible when hairstyle allows. Passprint’s India preset scales the crop toward that band instead of leaving a tiny face in a large white field.

Background

A plain white background is the Indian passport default — no patterns, gradients, or other people. Coloured studio curtains and shadowed walls fail often. The white background guide explains how Passprint replaces imperfect walls before you lock the India crop.

Lighting

Even front light keeps both cheeks similar in brightness and avoids chin shadows on the white field. Avoid window backlight and beauty filters that flatten facial features. Shoot at eye level with a little headroom for the 35×45 crop.

Glasses

Indian passport photos are safest without spectacles. Frames can cast shadows and lenses create glare that obscure the eyes. Ask clients to remove glasses unless a documented medical exception applies under current Passport Seva rules.

Children and babies

Infants and children still need a 35×45 mm white-background photo with the face clearly visible. Support under the head is sometimes used for newborns, but the supporter’s hands or arms must stay out of frame. Capture when eyes are open and the expression is as neutral as practical.

Common rejection reasons

Frequent failures include wrong size, face too small, coloured or shadowed backgrounds, red-eye, smiling with teeth showing, low-resolution soft files, and stretched conversions from a US square crop. Re-crop with the India preset rather than resizing another country’s print.

Print vs digital

Many Indian applications still use printed photos on photo paper; some online flows accept digital uploads with portal-specific limits. Export a sharp 300 DPI file from the passport photo maker, then downscale only if a form requires a smaller JPEG.

DPI and pixels

At 300 DPI, 35×45 mm is about 413×531 pixels — the practical studio default for A4 multi-copy sheets. Start from a high-resolution portrait so ICAO-style face framing stays sharp after crop. See the ICAO guide when you need Doc 9303 context beyond Passport Seva millimetres.
